Do you think it is possible to school in a bitless bridle? Here is Maj being schooled by my friend. She puts a flash on him because he often opens his mouth and charges. I've just ordered a Dr Cook's bridle that I'll use for hacking out but I'd also like to see him in the school with one in the hope he might relax more.

  1. Major you are a lovely mover.
I use a sidepull bridle with Jack for lessons...seems to work well

  2. I school Red in his Parelli halter sometimes, as he bites the bit and snatches, getting strong sometimes. He's far more responsive in his halter.

  3. I`ll be interested to hear how you get on with your DC as Duds took all of about 2secs to realise that he could eat more efficiently without a bit in his mouth! Maj might be more mannerly though!

  4. It is a good idea to give them a change of routine. Sometimes we ride both bridleless and saddleless when inside the round pen. My horses seem to enjoy the novelty of it. Perhaps Maj will like it very much.

  5. Bridle arrived today but I must have measured incorrectly as it is too small. I'll send it back and reorder and keep you posted!

  6. Due to problems with a tooth on my horse I have tried different bitless solutions.

What has worked best on my horse is a padded sidepull – to me it feels like riding on a snaffle.
Personally I also feel that the flexion/bending signals work better with the sidepull compared to Dr Cook or a hackamore, and that the release is better than on the Dr Cook-types.

But there are not two horses that are alike, and not us riders either!
Looking forward to hear how it works for you.

  7. jc - thanks for your comment on my blog.
If you want more info on the sidepull I have pic and some more info on my posts from June. If you want to have a chat about it, just post a line. I am linking you up.
Your horse is beautiful, and so is the countryside!

  8. Beautiful movement! I use a Tellington TTouch sidepull, sometimes in combination with their bridle, which has a rollerbit that gives excellent, though gentle feedback. Sometimes we use it just to carry around on the ground.
    Try it sometime!
